Building Your Resume - What Color is Your Parachute

Resume Tips

Is Your Resume Professional?

In order to make an interview memorable, your resume must be creative and clean. This means you must have the same font and format throughout the whole resume. I suggest using a template resume. I included a link to some free resume downloads at the end of this blog.

  • Make sure your email is professional looking (ex. Billy@gmail.com, not BigBilly69@gmail.com)
Your email address will be the first thing a potential employer will notice on your resume. It should clearly represent your name in a professional manner.
  • Your email should be from a current website or domain (up-to-date email domains show you are also up-to-date with current technology)
Gmail is usually the go-to email address for today. Out of date email domains include: Hotmail, Yahoo, and Aol.
  • Post your resume to LinkedIn, and be sure to connect other social media channels (LinkedIn should have links to Facebook, YouTube, Blogs)
These social media channels should be regularly audited to avoid inappropriate posts that potential employers may see.
  • Make sure to add contact information of your previous employers (provide at least two forms of contact info)
Always make sure it's okay with previous employers to add their information before you send in your resume!

Is Your Resume Formatted and Designed Properly?

  • Be sure to use a template in order to be clear and have visually appealing message to read
This message should demonstrate your strengths and should also adapt to whatever kind of business your applying to.
  • Use an easy-to-read font (some fonts are a bit too creative for employers)
Fonts like Arial, Courier, Georgia, Helvetica, Times, Trebuchet, and Veranda are all good choices.
  • Once you pick a format and font, stick to it
Changes made in the middle to the end of your resume will confuse employers
  • Make sure all included links are working properly
A good idea is to click on the links in preview mode or copy and paste them onto your browser .
  • Have peers read your resume (get a different perspective on your resume)
Your mom doesn't count. What works for me is to ask random classmates who won't have any bias whatsoever.
  • Convert your resume to a download format that anyone can use (PDF format is recommended)
If your employer has a Mac, they may be unable to download Microsoft files
